Look at the layout first
If the layout works and cabinet boxes are sound, a refresh may focus on fronts, hardware, counters, backsplash and lighting. If storage, circulation or appliance positions are fundamentally wrong, a broader redesign may be more appropriate.
Check the existing condition
Inspect cabinet movement, moisture damage, worn drawer systems and the surfaces around the sink. A new finish cannot fix a weak box. Ask a cabinet specialist what can reasonably be retained and what must be replaced.
Coordinate the choices
Sink dimensions, counter cut-outs, backsplash height, appliance clearances and lighting locations affect one another. Choose compatible products before the work reaches the point where a change means repeating a trade visit.
Plan life during the work
Discuss dust protection, access to water, a temporary food-preparation area and how long each part will be unavailable. Ask which phase produces the greatest improvement without closing the kitchen for longer than necessary.
